Frequently asked questions

The right to Privacy is a fundamental human right. Privacy is important for a number of reasons, including preventing excessive surveillance, reducing the risk of data falling into the wrong hands and being used for malicious purposes, helping to maintain social boundaries and build trust. Privacy rights ensure that you have control over your data.

There are several steps you can take. Start by assessing your privacy settings. Review what you share online. Use a search engine which does not track you. Utilise a VPN for secure browsing. Create strong, unique passwords and where possible use two-factor authentication.

The Swiss Federal Constitution stipulates that everyone has the right to respect the privacy of their private and family life, their home and telecommunications, aswell as the protection against the misuse of their personal data. In order to ensure this protection, the Federal Law on Data Protection (FADP) was passed and has been in force since 1 July 1993. It has now been revised after lengthy debate, with the new version coming into force on 1st September 2023. In addition, there are numerous personal protection provisions in other laws, for example in the Swiss Civil Code.

Under the Swiss Data Protection Law, you have several rights, such as the right to information about how your personal data is processed, the right to withdraw your consent to the processing of your data, the right to request your personal data, the right to rectify incorrect or incomplete data or to erase it entirely. It is important to know the rights you can exercise.

Each party involved in handling your data should provide information about its processing in a privacy statement and provide a contact person responsible for privacy issues. This is your point of contact for information about your rights. Alternatively, you can get more information from the cantonal or federal data protection officer, where you can also lodge a complaint or you can contact us and we will help you.

You might have nothing to hide, but your privacy is not respected and your data can be used without you knowing or for purposes for which you have not agreed to, for example companies selling your data to advertisers or third parties. Your data can be used as a currency and is potentially valuable for businesses.
